Any other moms out there completely confused with what to wear now? I know I’m not alone in this confusion. I want to look trendy, without looking like I’m trying too hard. I want it to be easy, without looking lazy. I want to be comfortable without relying on sweatpants or leggings everyday. Over the past year, I’ve tried so many different types of clothing styles. I’ve followed fashion and mommy influencers. I looked into capsule wardrobes. Now, I’d love to say all of this has helped me find my style and that today I’ll be writing about the best, easiest, and cutest clothes that fit that mom lifestyle…but I have to be honest… I’m still trying to get out of this funk myself. My goal of writing this blog isn’t to help you find your solution, but to let you know that you are not alone in feeling this way and share a few of the things I’ve done to help push myself in the right direction.
To start, I want to break this down a little. It’s difficult to learn your new mom style for many reasons…
- Your body goes through so many changes in such a short time. When you’re pregnant your sizes are literally changing weekly. Then all of a sudden you have this new body that’s recovering and changing daily. And then, when the dust seems to have settled, you’re left with a new body, unlike any one you’ve ever had before.
- Your needs are also changing. Fom needing mega-stretch pants, to easy access shirts, to clothes that hide mac n cheese stains. Clothes you loved newly postpartum simply aren’t working later on and the comfy style you enjoyed when you were healing, now seems sloppy. You want something more put together.
- You don’t know what the heck is going on with your undergarments. Do you want to go back to your pre-baby undies? Do you need a new size bra? You love the comfort of those nursing bras, but hate the way they look in a regular t-shirt.
At least, these were the problems I seemed to have noticed within myself and my closet. So let’s see if we can figure some things out together.
UNDERGARMENTS
After lots of frustration with trying to figure out my new mom style, I finally realized my undergarments weren’t doing me any favors! I was lucky enough to get to breastfeed my baby past my initial goal, but that also meant I was wearing nursing bras for soooo many months! I literally forgot what a real bra looked and felt like. Not to mention, when I finally did stop breastfeeding, my boobs were completely different. None of my old bras fit. When I finally decided enough was enough, I measured myself and bought a pack of new cotton t-shirt bras to join me on my journey to finding my mom style. When they came in the mail a couple days later, I was shocked at how much better I already felt. Even in a simple white t-shirt, I went from feeling frumpy to looking put together. In addition to a new bra, I packed away all my pregnancy undies and bought a fresh pack of super comfortable cotton underwear.
THE BASICS
After feeling fresh with my new undergarments I decided to focus on getting some new basics. I had lots of jeans…some fit, some didn’t, but they were all skinny jeans. I couldn’t fully commit to the wide leg look, but I was willing to try a straight fit. I got a few pairs of Levi’s 501 originals at the outlet and was ready to give it a try! I love the look of jeans and a tank top look, but all my tanks were honestly getting stretched out and looking old. I got a fresh pack of ribbed tanks and was feeling much better already.
I still wanted the option to wear leggings sometimes, but quickly learned that skinny leggings weren’t “in” anymore! Ugh, you miss so much when you have a baby. I looked all over and found some flared leggings that I was happy with. They were fitted in the thighs with just a bit of a flare at the bottom.
Heading back to my closet, I now had a few options for basic looks… jeans, tanks, and leggings. It wasn’t a lot but I could build on top of these!
BUILDING ON TOP
This was the time that I decided to start looking in my closet to see what I already had that could work. I also wanted to filter out items that weren’t working for me anymore. I ended up keeping a lot of the button down shirts I bought during my breastfeeding days. I could wear them unbuttoned, with a tank underneath or tie them around my waist for a more athletic look. I also decided I was really liking my crew neck sweatshirts. I had a few oversized ones and a few smaller ones. I liked how these outfits looked a little preppy, but were also just really easy and comfortable to wear. I kept a few oversized sweaters that I liked for the winter, and a few basic t-shirts I already had in my closet.
THE SHOES
For the shoes, I’ve always been a Vans girlie, but I wanted to get some new pairs. I got a red pair of Old Skools, which I love because it gives a nice pop of color. I also still want to get a fresh new pair of the classic checkered slip ons. I feel like you can’t go wrong with that shoe and as a mom, who doesn’t love a slip on!?
TO BE CONTINUED
So… am I the cutest new mom out there now? Far from it! But, I do feel so much better about my style now. I’ve really taken on the “uniform” mindset. I wear things I know look cute together, I don’t care about repeating outfits (who’s really paying attention anyway), and I try to layer items on top of a basic outfit to give it a new look. Finding our style as moms is an ongoing task, just when you get the hang of it a trend changes or your body changes. That’s okay! My goal moving forward is to continue to edit my closet so I don’t have to deal with things that don’t fit my body or my style and to continue to focus on keeping things simple…God knows our lives are crazy enough already.
Below, I’ve provided a quick little list of the items I talked about (and some I didn’t) to help get you started. But please know that every BODY is different and every style is different.
