How to Start the New Year Right: 5 Key Steps

Heading into the New Year can be fun, exciting, or even scary. It’s another year gone, but it’s also another year grown! Here are my top 5 things to do in the New Year to help you start on the right track!

1. Reflect on the past year

It’s important to think about the past year because it’s too easy to forget what has actually happened! You may feel like you didn’t achieve much, but after looking back you realize you were really successful! Or maybe you suffered a tough year and want to look back to see how much you’ve grown. Either way, it’s nice to look back at our year to help guide us into the new year.

2. Set intentions for the new year

Notice, I didn’t say write a list of goals. Sure, this may work for some, but we all know how crazy life can get. It’s so discouraging when you’re unable to reach goals you set for yourself months earlier! I prefer to set intentions for the year. It can be a sentence or even just words. It should be anything that helps guide you through the year. This keeps your focus on track.

3. Deep clean your house

A nice deep clean of your house is a great way to start fresh. It helps you welcome the new year! You can do it yourself, make it a family cleaning day, or hire a service. Going into the new year with a clean house will feel so good!

4. Donate old toys, clothes, etc.

This is an ideal time of year. Have everyone in your home take a minute to clean out their old stuff! Get rid of old books, clothes, electronics, toys, really anything! You can choose to sell it, donate it, or simply toss it (we all know some things are beyond donating!) Cleaning out your home helps make room for all your new Christmas gifts. It also helps you start the new year with a clutter free space.

5. Reset your budget

Take the new year as an opportunity to sit down and look at your finances. If you have a yearly budget/tracker, it’s time to reset it. You might even want to revamp it to better fit your needs. It’s important to start the new year with a new financial awareness and maybe even some new goals.
