Okay to Wake Clock: Implementing a New Routine

What is an okay to wake clock?

This is a method of using a color changing clock to help toddlers with their sleep and naps. Most common, is having the clock display red when it’s time for your toddler to stay in their bed and green when it’s time to wake up! It works as a visual tool to reinforce the routine and boundary of staying in your bed during naps and bedtime.

When is it best to introduce an okay to wake clock?

While every child is different, we decided to implement this method when my son turned 2. But truly, you can implement it at any age. Just be sure that your child shows a firm understanding of simple directions!

Why introduce an okay to wake clock?

There can be a variety of reasons to introduce an okay to wake clock. Maybe your child is experiencing disruptions in their sleep, early morning wake ups, or you’re transitioning to a toddler bed.

We first introduced it after my son began to climb out of his crib. We used it in combination with a few other tools to try to keep him in his crib longer. Our hope is that he will learn this new routine and when it comes time for the toddler bed it might make the transition a little smoother. (No guarantees here…just going off what I’ve seen other parents do – I’ll have to report back when we transition to a toddler bed!)

How to use an okay to wake clock?

Using an okay to wake clock is very simple!

  1. Get the right clock – Be sure you have a clock/night light that has the ability to change colors (preferably with an app on your phone) The Hatch and the MomCozy are two of the ones we use!
  2. Turn on “sleep” color – Turn on the “sleep” color as you enter the room for naps and bedtime. This signals to your little one that it’s time to get settled in.
  3. Use the “wake” color when it’s time to wake up – Use a timer or an app to change the clock to the “wake” color when your little one wakes up or when they’re time in their bed is done. I like to use the app on my phone to change the color.
  4. Give lots of praise and stay consistent – Share out loud how proud you are that your little one stayed in bed until the light changed colors. This will bring more attention to the fact that the clock’s changing colors have a purpose. And as with everything, stay consistent. They can’t learn a new skill/routine if you don’t practice it everyday!

How long should you wait before the clock turns to the wake up color?

At first, you can change the clock to the wake up color and go into their room immediately . Over a few weeks, you’ll want to work your way up to waiting between 20-30 minutes before turning on the wake up color and going to get them. Of course, this is as long as they aren’t getting upset. This will help with the ultimate goal of keeping your little one in their bed/room for longer periods of time.

For my son, I find that in the morning he’s less cranky when I give him about 30 minutes to fully wake up. Just like an adult, it’s beneficial to have some time to yourself in the morning. He usually has no problem waiting. Even for naps, he does really well when given a bit of time before having to actually get out of bed!

Please remember, as always, I am sharing my experiences and what I’m doing with my child! If your experience differs or you don’t like this method, choose something that works for you. I always consult with my son’s pediatrician before implementing anything and if you have any concerns, you should do the same.
