The Ultimate Gift Giving Guide for Moms

If you know me, you know my love language is totally gift giving. I love going shopping and finding something you’ll love, packing it up cute, and crossing my fingers that you’ll love what you got. But once becoming a mom, my outlook on gifts has changed… just slightly. While I still want to get things for the people I love, I also understand that sometimes it can get excessive! The last thing I want to do for another person, moms especially, is add stress and clutter to their lives. Aside from the obvious #1 rule (always buy off the registry), this is my new #2 rule. It can really help keep your gifts focused.

Something they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to read!

When I came across this “rule,” I actually loved it! We used it this past Christmas and it really helped us to not go overboard! It’s an easy and simple guide to follow that can work for any occasion.

  • Something they WANT – The want gives you an opportunity to really think about the person who is receiving the gift. Your goal is to get them something they would enjoy. And the best part is, it doesn’t always have to be practical. It can be something silly, trendy, cute, or just for fun! For kids, it will most likely be a toy or gadget. For adults, you’ll really have to think about something that they would want and like.
  • Something they NEED – This gift allows you to give something that you think would be practical! If you’re a parent you could give your child something they’ve been needing for a bit. Maybe it’s something seasonal or specific to what’s going on in their life right now. If you’re giving a gift to someone else, you’ll probably need to think a bit about what you think they could really use!
  • Something to WEAR – A “wear” gift is for you to get something that reflects the person’s individual style! Thinking of my son, this would be my chance to get a bluey outfit or some cute shirts with cars on them. I do think this gift should also be fun, if it’s something like pajamas or new shoes, it might be better suited for their “need” gift.
  • Something to READ – While this gift is pretty obvious, I think it’s important to take into account the age of the person and the purpose of what you’re giving them. I like to give a book that matches the theme of everything else I’m giving. (For example, holiday books for holiday gifts.) You can also get creative and give a cookbook, magazines, crafting books, etc.

Now of course, this doesn’t have to be the rule every single time! Some gifts are just a single gift and others are just silly and fun. There are also probably plenty of times when you do want to buy a bunch of things and go a little overboard…that’s fine too! It’s simply a guide to help with gift giving, if you want to use it!
